A family looking for dinner may ask AI which restaurant has food their children will enjoy. A patient may ask what to expect from a first appointment. A business owner may ask whether a consultant can help with a recurring operational problem.
An answer can help each of them narrow the choice. It does not necessarily complete the decision.
They may still need to see the current menu, understand the appointment fee, inspect a relevant case or confirm what happens after making an enquiry. That unfinished decision gives a business website a purpose.
For owners deciding where to spend their marketing budget, the useful question is becoming more specific: what can a visitor accomplish on our website that makes the next step worthwhile?
Why This Matters
AI search can satisfy part of a customer’s information need before they click. That does not remove the commercial value of a website; it changes what the website must do. Owners who treat every visit as equal, or who commission more interchangeable explanations without resolving booking, price or evidence gaps, risk spending against the wrong problem.
Key Points
– Google’s 15 October 2026 Search update describes more prominent inline links and a test that may surface official web destinations for certain tasks. It does not establish more visits, bookings or revenue for any particular business. – A research visit and a booking-ready visit perform different jobs. Count them separately when judging contribution. – Fewer sessions can raise or lower contribution depending on completed-transaction conversion?봧llustrated only through labelled hypothetical scenarios. – Before buying more pages, identify where a prospective customer still gets stuck, then measure completed transactions and contribution over a defined period.
What Google announced?봞nd what it does not establish
On 15 October, Google announced changes to its AI search experiences, including displaying inline links higher in responses more frequently. It also described a test that would prominently surface one or two official web destinations for certain tasks, with context explaining their usefulness. [1]
These are changes to how sources and destinations appear. The announcement does not establish that a particular business will receive more visits, bookings or revenue.
Our interpretation is that owners should examine both discovery and destination: whether people can find accurate information about the business, and whether the website helps them complete the next decision.
The business value of a visit
A person researching ?쐗hat is Korean comfort food???has a different immediate need from someone checking whether a restaurant can accommodate a family tonight.
Both visits may matter. An early research visit can build familiarity that leads to a later purchase. But counting them as economically identical hides the different jobs the website performs.
The same distinction applies to services. Someone reading about a treatment is not necessarily ready to book. Someone comparing a consultant?셲 scope, evidence and enquiry process may be closer to a commercial conversation.
A useful website serves these different stages without forcing every visitor into a sales form.
It should help readers understand, evaluate and act. The appropriate action might be saving useful information, checking availability, making a booking or asking a specific question.
Three businesses, three reasons to click
Consider the following illustrative examples.
For a restaurant, the website can provide a current menu with prices, accurate dish photographs, practical dietary information, location and a clear reservation or ordering route. A generic description of the cuisine cannot resolve all those details.
For a clinic, it can explain the services offered, practitioner credentials, what an appointment involves, available fee information and how booking works. It should also make clear that general information cannot determine an individual patient?셲 suitability for treatment.
For a consultancy, it can show the problem addressed, the work included, a relevant implementation example, limitations and the next step. ?쏻e use AI to transform businesses??leaves a prospective customer with too much to work out.
Across these examples, the opportunity is to reduce the uncertainty that remains before a customer can make a useful decision.
A financial test: fewer visits can help?봮r hurt
Traffic remains useful, but it should be interpreted alongside completed business.
A simple starting model is:
Monthly website sessions 횞 session-to-completed-transaction conversion rate 횞 contribution per completed transaction.
Contribution here means revenue less the variable costs of delivering that transaction. It is not net profit.
The following scenarios are hypothetical. They are not forecasts, benchmarks or measured results of AI search.
Assume each completed transaction contributes QAR 80 before the website and acquisition costs shown below.
| Monthly measure | A: Starting position | B: Fewer sessions, stronger conversion | C: Fewer sessions, unchanged conversion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Website sessions | 1,000 | 600 | 600 |
| Completed-transaction conversion rate | 2% | 4% | 2% |
| Completed transactions | 20 | 24 | 12 |
| Contribution per transaction | QAR 80 | QAR 80 | QAR 80 |
| Transaction contribution | QAR 1,600 | QAR 1,920 | QAR 960 |
| Assumed website/acquisition costs | QAR 600 | QAR 600 | QAR 600 |
| Contribution after those costs | QAR 1,000 | QAR 1,320 | QAR 360 |
Scenario B illustrates how a smaller audience could produce more contribution if conversion improved sufficiently. Scenario C shows the downside when traffic falls without that improvement.
The calculation does not demonstrate that AI search causes either outcome. The equal cost assumption is deliberate: higher content, advertising or maintenance costs could change the comparison.
The remaining contribution still has to cover other fixed costs and obligations.
For a business that records enquiries rather than purchases, add another step:
Sessions 횞 enquiry rate 횞 enquiry-to-completed-sale rate 횞 contribution per completed sale.
A submitted form is not a completed sale. A reservation that becomes a no-show is not a paid visit.
Measurement also needs care. A person might discover the business through AI, visit its website later and finally book by telephone. Website attribution can be incomplete. Nor does an attributed transaction prove the customer would otherwise have been lost.
What deserves the next improvement budget?
Before commissioning more pages, examine where a prospective customer still gets stuck.
Can they find the current price or understand how a quotation is determined? Can they see evidence relevant to their situation? Does the mobile booking or enquiry route work? Is someone responsible for responding?
Then choose one improvement and observe what changes over a defined period. Track completed transactions and contribution where possible, alongside enquiries and visits. Note changes in promotions, seasonality and capacity before attributing the result to the website.
Useful educational content still has a role. It can help readers learn, compare and build trust. But publishing more interchangeable explanations is a weak substitute for resolving a real customer question.
The opportunity beyond the website owner
For designers, writers and independent service providers, this creates a practical area of work: helping businesses keep information accurate, present credible evidence and make the next step easier.
That work needs maintenance and measurement. A promise to make every business ?쐒ecommended by AI??offers more certainty than the evidence supports.
For the customer, the benefit should be equally concrete: less time checking inconsistent information and a clearer view of what they are buying.
Takeaways
AI can help someone discover your business. Your website earns its visit when it helps them decide what to do next?봞nd delivers a reliable way to do it.
